After gorging ourselves on food over the holidays, many of us make resolutions to improve our health, which we fully intend to keep. Unfortunately, we often fail because we’ve set our goals too high or we lack the dedication.
This is why we at Imperial have come up with 5 health-related resolutions that we think you can easily keep:
1. Incorporate more whole foods into your meals.
To improve your odds of sticking to your goals regarding diet, do not go to extremes and instead make only moderate changes. One way to do this would be to improve the nutritional value of your meals by adding more whole foods like fish, fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetables.
Consuming more whole foods can help decrease your risks of developing diabetes, heart disease and/or obesity. If you are not used to eating these things, start gradually. You will be surprised at what foods you will fall in love with. Have you tried cooking asparagus in olive oil with a touch of salt…yum! Another idea is freezing bananas, then blending them with oat milk, peanut butter and honey for a protein shake! Natural foods are sounding better and better, am I right?
2. Figure out some type of physical activity that you can enjoy.
Rather than committing to an expensive fitness program, figure out some type of physical exercise that you can actually enjoy on a regular basis. It’s easy to give up on exercise if you’re doing something you actually don’t want to do.
There are many activities to choose from, like cycling, jogging, swimming, etc. To improve the odds of you sticking to a routine, set short-term goals that you can realistically achieve.
3. Make sure you are getting enough sleep.
Make your mind up to get the amount of sleep you need in 2021. Getting sufficient undisturbed sleep can improve your physical health and mental acuity. On the other hand, people who are sleep deprived are prone to developing heart disease, obesity, and depression.
To help you get a better night’s sleep, limit your screen time before bedtime and cut down on alcohol and caffeine consumption. Try going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning. Your body will eventually adapt to this schedule, which should improve your sleep.
4. Meditate on a daily basis.
Medical studies have shown that meditation done on a regular basis helps create a positive mental state. It’s been proven to relieve anxiety and reduce the risks of depression.
For 2021, make up your mind to meditate every day and you will notice how much better you feel mentally. Get in the habit of meditating for 10 minutes at a time while listening to relaxing music in the background.
5. Have regular medical checkups.
To safeguard your overall health, it’s important that you have regular medical checkups. This would include blood tests, a check of your blood pressure along with your heart rate and other tests to detect potential issues.
When you have regular checkups, your doctor can spot health problems before they become serious. You should also have regular dental checks as tooth decay and sore or bleeding gums can be precursors to other health issues.
Start taking steps
Rather than setting unrealistic resolutions, be easier on yourself by setting goals that you can more easily attain. Take small incremental steps to reach them and stay mentally positive. Embracing new possibilities and a healthier lifestyle will certainly have its rewards in 2021.
